Barbara Deitrick    Biography

Born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1968. Barbara expressed curiosity in drawing and painting at an early age. She grew up in Laurel, Delaware, where surrounding countryside views and cypress swamps were a constant inspiration to the young emerging artist. Barbara earned her bachelors degree in 1992 from the University of Delaware, with concentration in the study of fine art, illustration and Art History. Upon Graduation, Barbara began working towards her goal of becoming a full time artist. In the evenings Barbara taught drawing and painting classes for the Christiana School District while also focusing on commissioned artwork, which she would be frequently hired to produce. Dupont Merck is among the numerous companies that have commissioned Barbara to produce artwork for them. Other commissioned jobs have ranged from painting illustrations for residential building companies all the way to designing and painting backdrops and props for theatre companies like the Three Little Bakers Dinner Theatre Club and the Delaware Theatre Company. Barbara worked during the day in a retail art gallery and picture framing studio, where she was taught conservation framing of fine art and gallery management, but her greatest discovery was to meet her future husband at the gallery.

In the summer of 1995 Barbara and Chip moved to Southern Delaware. Later, Barbara began instructing for Delaware Technical & Community College until the decision was made in the winter of 1998 to open a their own gallery. Deitrick’s One Stop Art Shop was a successful Business for over 8 years. In September of 2004 the decision was made to close the gallery and picture framing studio. Barbara felt it was time to work strictly as an artist, and with her husbands support, now was the time to pursue art as a full time career.

Currently, Barbara’s paintings and prints can be found in many galleries, private collections and commercial establishments along the Delmarva Shore. Barbara has been showcased in one woman exhibitions, juried and invitational art shows. View upcoming exhibits on her website. www.onestopartshop.com. Barbara is an active member of the South Eastern Delaware Artist Studio Tour (SEDAST), Milton Arts Guild, and helps contribute funding to support many local charities as well as local schools art programs.

“I seem to be inspired by the feelings I get about a subject. For me, recreating an image requires some experimentation to try to fulfill the sentiment. I try accurately to recreate the scene, but, I want you to feel what I was feeling at the time I discovered it. By using traditional techniques, once used by the old world masters, I focus on building layers, establishing values, and mixing each color by hand. These things make a huge difference in describing something. It makes a painting come to life.”
